10 Things you should know about the Driscoll’s Amesti Strawberry from Lower Ruele Farm

Are you enjoying the Dip Your Own strawberries in our pubs? Here are some reasons why we chose the Driscoll’s Amesti Strawberry from Lower Ruele Farm. The best of the best!

1. 60 hectares of strawberry plants are grown on Lower Ruele, 48 of which are grown in “table-tops” – that’s a lot of strawberries!

3. Perfect temperature for growing & ripening strawberries 22 Degrees – according to Charles, it’s the perfect temperature for eating too. Yum!

4. Lower Ruele was originally a pig farm, but in the early 1990s the farm switched its focus to soft fruit production supplying the market via Berry Gardens, the cooperative.

5. The farm plans 5 years in advance – now that’s preparation.

6. The reservoir on the farm helps irrigate the crops also reducing the dependency on local water supplies, it’s also home to wildlife and fauna – It’s one world…

7. Each plant is a clone of its “mother” high quality genetic plant; this means that no disease can be passed down through generations. The mother plants are carefully nurtured and monitored by Driscoll’s. They are absolute masters in what they do – Clever Strawberries.

8. In the UK, traditionally strawberries are picked with stalks, (like the ones you will find for Dip Your Own) but in Europe, they will pick the berries without stalks, as they can sometimes pierce other strawberries in the punnet – Ever seen a strawberry with a hole in it…don’t’ worry it’s not a bug, it was his neighbours stalk!

9. Grown in coir, which is a by-product of the coconut production in Sri Lanka – waste not, want not.

10.  Lower Ruele will harvest the Driscoll’s Amesti from June to late October, depending on the first frost – here’s to a long Summer.
