Less than eight months since we took over, The Bear & Ragged Staff in Cumnor has just won an AA Award for Culinary Excellence 2018-2019!
The village pub is a world away from the Newbury & Swindon roads that stream past only a mile from its door. The heart of the pub is glorious Tudor beauty; ancient fireplaces, flagstone floors and mullioned windows with carved lintels, make the bar one of the finest anywhere. We also have a comfortable eatery, conservatory and South-facing terrace, providing spaces for every mood. The winding stairs lead to cosy bedrooms with old oak doorways & beamed ceilings.
As well as launching an all-new menu of freshly prepared seasonal food, the pub underwent a complete refurbishment which all helped in achieving the 1 Rosette accolade following a recent anonymous visit by an AA Hotel and Restaurant Inspector.
The AA Rosette scheme was first introduced in 1956, recognising cooking at different levels in hotels, pubs and restaurants across the country. Establishments earning a 1 Rosette demonstrate great cooking across the entire meal, serving food prepared with care, understanding and skill alongside good quality ingredients, meaning stand out food in the local area.
It’s a huge achievement to be awarded an AA Rosette and we’re all absolutely thrilled. Like all our pubs, The Bear’s menu shows how hard we work to offer the best pub food, made with the best quality ingredients, with warm, friendly service. We want to ensure our guests have the best experience whenever they visit. Since re-opening in the Spring, we have focussed on creating a great pub for the village, where anyone can come for a pint or a plate of something good to eat, and having the quality of our food in particular being recognised by such an important and widely-recognised award is fantastic!
Pop into the pub and see our AA Rosette Plate on display in the bar. We’re also now serving our new Autumn menu too, with hearty dishes for the season including a comforting 14-hour braised beef and ale pie served with buttery mash and spring greens and duck Bolognaise with a rich duck ragù, egg pappardelle and crispy duck crumb.
